Enough people have recommended this American ‘cop show’ to us now that we’ve decided to watch it. I’ve heard there’s even a forum been set up called ‘life after the wire’ or something similar for people who have finished watching it. We’re about 3 episodes in now. I’m looking forward to getting right into it.
P.S. Any ladies out there watching it?

I got hooked on it about 2005 after the 2nd season got released on DVD.
Its absolutely bloody fantastic. Set about some time to watch it. Best done in concentrated fashion. Three or four episodes a day over long weekend. One warning once you get into it all other TV drama seems shit.
You will be wanting your Re Up of the next season before you know it. Enjoy the next 60 hours of TV pleasure.

Hi Mattius J, I didn’t realise it was that old. Here’s me thinking it was just out. We’ve been watching them about 2 at a time, every night. The storyline is still just being set out at the moment, not really sure what way it’s going yet.
I never watch TV drama because it’s all usually shit but so many people rave about The Wire.

aye, it’s superb
totally brutal in parts but one of the best cop dramas to come out in recent years
Finished watching the final series recently, was gutted when it ended

I watched the very first episode and it looked good. I plan on watching them all. I like the fact its set in Baltimore, you don’t normally see places like that in American TV and films.

Well I finished watching the first series lastnight. It was good but it wasn’t REALLY good until the last 2 episodes. I wasn’t like ‘oh my god, oh my god, this is amazing’ though.

stick with it Lynn, it just keeps getting better and better
esp as they develop some of the key characters, such as Jimmy who for me was the star of the show…

Eh?
December 18, 2008 at 12:01 pm |
Well, 3 episodes into the second series and there’s about 4 different storylines running at the same time, difficult to keep track of everything.

Aye its quite complex thats why you need to watch a season over a few days. You loving Stringer Bell or Lester Freamon?
December 18, 2008 at 10:06 pm |
I’m loving Stringer Bell but I think I’m loving him for different reasons to you.

Thats would be correct. Hard to believe he is a Londoner.
December 20, 2008 at 12:34 pm |
Is he? I would never have though it, is he a proper Londoner, accent and everything? He’s a very good, lovely, lovely actor.

Charlie Brooker on The Wire. Nothing given away here.
DONT WATCH ANY OF THE IDRIS ELBA INTERVIEWS ON YOUTUBE AS THEY MAY/WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS.
Strongly recommend David Simons Books. Homicide A Year on the Killing Streets and The Corner which was made into a Mini series thats very good but really rather depressing.

Another one I really enjoyed was 6ft under.

How are you getting on with it now Lynn? I’ve just finished series 1 and am about to start series 2.
Had an argument with my girlfriend about it because she thinks its too real and bleak, and i liked the realism but thought that some of it was a wee bit U.S. cop show cliche: you know the altrusistic Cop hero(ine) who just does it out of sheer duty. like when Kima Greggs takes 2 bullets but still wants to go back to the job she loves like its a vocation. I just felt that was a bit tired, unrealistic. What did you think?
January 23, 2009 at 6:01 pm |
Well colm, we are on Series 3 now and it’s the best one so far. I thought series 2 was really bleak and a bit boring. I personally don’t think it’s real, it’s a bit too glossy for that. I think the what gets you hooked is getting to know the characters more as time goes on, I definitely think it’s a slow burner. Omar’s great in 3.

You want see what happens at the end well McNulty and blah blah sorry only joking.I thought it was great but not totally realistic.I work with a couple of girls from Baltimore and they say it is really rough though. They had to be bussed into their job at the hospital and bussed back out as the surrounding area was so crazy.
January 24, 2009 at 11:06 pm |
Sorry that was meant to be “you want to see what happens”

Season 4 was brilliant too. We’re on Season 5 now and it’s not as good as 4 yet, I’m hoping it picks up.

You should watch 6 feet under next best TV drama I have seen.Took me a couple of episodes to get into it but I soon became addicted.
I liked Omar in the Wire he was my favourite character.

BBC2 are going to broadcast it starting 30th of March from the first episode and will be broadcasting an episode a night during the week, which shows a level of appreciation about the way you need to watch it. Pity its taken them nearly seven years. Not to be missed, tell everyone you know.
